I am interested but I am not sure about buying a “franchise”?
A franchise is a particular legal form of dealership.   You may be surprised at how extensive franchising is in the UK.   You may be re-assured by the very low failure rate among franchisees in those businesses that are franchised in the UK.   In our 35 years Weed Man has found our business format works best of all in a franchise network.   This could not be the case if our franchisees did not choose to stay with Weed Man.

Do I need to know how to run a business?
No.  Whatever your background, if you have the aptitude, we can train you in every single aspect of running a successful Weed Man businesses.

Is my investment safe with a franchise?
Any business investment carries risk, but statistics show that if you invest in a franchise you are less likely to lose out than investors in other private business.   By investing in a franchise you are also investing in yourself as well as in our business format.

What is the growth potential of a franchise?
Ultimately growth is determined by the size of market you choose to serve, how well you beat the competition and your personal ambition and ability.   As a Service Manager operating one van you can make good money out of 500 customers.   If you employ a technician to operate the van for you, you can make good money out of a 1000 customers.   As a Dealer running several vans the growth potential is high – you set the limits.

What exclusivity do I have for my franchise?
100% in your territory.   Weed Man can give you a list of all the households in your territory and ensures that other franchisees keep to their own area just as you will keep to yours.

What are the limits to the development of a franchise?
You set the limits.   Our experience is that some franchisees prefer to run a home-based family business while others take a more ‘corporate’ approach and work to grow their business much further.  For example: one successful franchisee has built up to over 100,000 customers over 15 years.   We encourage you to scale your business development to match your goals and management capabilities.

Is my franchise legally protected?
Yes – by your franchise agreement.   We aim to create such a positive and profitable partnership with our franchisees that neither party ever feels the need to look at this again.

Does lawn care generate repeat business?
A Weed Man lawn care business is all about repeat business – which is another way of saying that a Weed Man business is all about building long-term relationships with customers based on first-rate service.

Is there really a demand for lawn care services in the UK?
Over the last few years there has been steadily increasing demand for these services in the UK, but the market is by no means mature.   In 2007 probably 1 in 20 houses with lawns used lawn cares services, but by 2012 we expect that to be better than 1 in 10 and to continue growing for the foreseeable future.

What is the level of competition?
This varies locally.   You may find a couple of representatives of national networks operating in your area, and their presence helps Weed Man franchisees to get business.   You will probably find a high quality specialist, local service company and some former landscapers looking for alternative lighter work.   We have found very high recognition and recall of our “Weed Man” brand even after less than 12 months operating in a competitive area.

Competition stimulates overall demand and keeps us “on our toes”.   Weed Man welcomes competition and is actively seeking franchisees in areas where competitors are well-established.

What training and ongoing support is provided?
If you are a lawn care novice, full technical training will be provided in conjunction with a leading horticultural College.   Weed Man also give detailed training on: sales methods, sales training, service management, IT system and administrative back up.   There are ongoing refresher courses and continuous technical, business and management updates.   In your first year you can benefit from our free mentoring programme that provides you with 1 to 1 support from our most successful and experienced franchisees.

Do I need to have a background in lawn care, marketing and management?
No, you don’t.   Most of our franchisees have come from different backgrounds before starting with Weed Man, and they have proved to be very successful.   If you have experience of landscaping, horticulture or farming then this will help, but only if you want to be equally competent in sales, business management and IT.

Is it possible to finance part of the capital cost?
Yes. Most of the high-street banks have a franchise department and are very supportive of franchising in general and the Weed Man package in particular.

How much does training cost?
Nothing in the first year.   Later you benefit from ongoing professional education. Our priority is to ensure that all our dealers are fully aware of key issues and technically up to date all of the time.

Can I sell my business in the future?
Yes.   Weed Man has built a good reputation for working with their franchisees to get the best price for their business should they choose to leave the network – whatever the reason.

Are the projected earnings guaranteed?
No, projected earnings are for illustration purposes only.   When you sign up with Weed Man we work with you to develop your own business plan and budget for your potential territory.   Then we’ll allocate you an experienced dealer to mentor you so that you have the best possible chance of meeting your goals.

Do I need to have a special vehicle?
Yes, this is part of buying a franchise with Weed Man.   Your vehicle is your principal form of local advertising and promotion, recognized by the public as being synonymous with high service levels.

Can I use my own equipment?
Yes, if it meets Weed Man standards.   Otherwise we supply you with the best quality machinery at the best Q: Are there any restriction on the goods and suppliers I use in future?
possible prices.

I already have a business, but want to boost my profits with lawn care – do I still need to pay a franchise fee and royalties?
We can understand that people with established businesses don’t like franchise fees but what we are selling is our very substantial “goodwill” on a basis that is mutually agreed.   Everyone pays royalties from their second year once a proper cash flow has been established.

Can I have a business partner?
Yes.   Most of the successful Weed Man franchises are run by partnerships, perhaps husband and wife, perhaps a practical operator with a financier, but sales and service always go hand-in-hand.

I want to work from home – can I do that?
Yes.   Both Service Management and Dealership franchises can be run from home.   Our software helps you to plan routes to maximise your earning power from each area you tackle.   It also helps you to stay organised and on top of things so you can do most of what you need working from home.

Do I have to buy a software package?
Yes, this is central to the management of your future business.   Without our software you would spend far too much time in the office and not enough time earning money from your customers.

Does Head Office provide training for future employees?
Yes, for technicians and managers.   It is essential to Weed Man and to you that all your staff are trained to our high standards.

Are there any restriction on the goods and suppliers I use in future?
Yes, Weed Man only uses the best quality products, many of which are proprietary to Weed Man.  These will give you an advantage over your competitors.

Are marketing materials provided?
Yes.   There are endless options for keeping your prospects and customers interested in lawn care “the Weed Man way”.

What advertising and promotion has the company done so far?
We are members of the BFA, STRI and NAAC and through them we advertise nationally.   We are a regular exhibitor at the NFE and from time to time we advertise in national newspapers, trade magazines, local press and community magazines.

Do I need to advertise locally?
Probably yes, but only in a limited way.  It is up to you.   We research your area and will help you create the advert templates and promotional materials that work for you in your area.   You will quickly find out whether these costs are justified by results.   You benefit from free access to the Weed Man development data bank built up over 30 years.

Are here any hidden or unexpected costs?
No, we are open with you.   You want the best possible business opportunity and we are looking for the right people.   If our partnership is to work well then high levels of mutual trust and respect are essential from the outset.

What is the background of your existing franchisees?
None in lawn care.   Our current franchisees have come from advertising, banking, logistics, recruitment, farming and accountancy: in the Canadian and USA network our franchisees have come from almost any walk of life you can think of.

Can I talk to someone who has bought one of your franchises?
Yes – we will provide you with their phone number and arrange a meeting.   All we ask is that you first sign our simple confidentiality agreement.

What are the royalties?
As part of your franchise agreement with us you agree to pay an annual royalty per production vehicle in your fleet.   A reducing charge applies to second and subsequent production vehicles as an encouragement for successful franchisees to expand their businesses.   Our proprietary software includes facilities to help you to squeeze as much valuable production work as possible out of each van.

This reducing charge means that as your sales increase your royalty costs will fall as a percentage of net sales income.   This is an unusual model for a franchise, but it has stood the test of time.   In Canada it means that the average royalty cost per franchisees is equivalent to just 4 % of sales.

We aim to achieve at least the same for our Weed Man franchisees in the UK.
